Hannah Ounap Shines in Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship, Secures 9th Place in Match Play

The Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship has a storied history, with legends like Catriona Matthew, Belle Robertson, and Helen Holm having lifted the famous silver trophy. This year’s tournament continued this legacy, drawing top talent from across the nation.

The championship began with 36 holes of stroke play on Friday, with the top 16 golfers posting the lowest gross scores advancing to the knockout stages over the weekend. Hannah’s consistent and skillful play during the stroke play rounds secured her a spot among the top 16, setting the stage for her to compete in the match play tournament for the championship trophy.

The Nairn Golf Club, with its demanding links and stunning views, provided a fitting backdrop for this historic championship. The course tested the skills of every competitor, and Hannah’s performance demonstrated her ability to rise to the occasion.

The knockout stages, held on Saturday and Sunday, were a test of skill, strategy, and mental fortitude. Two Ayrshire qualifiers, Hannah Ounap and Freya Russell, were destined to meet in the first round and in an exciting match, Russell edged out Ounap by 3&2 to progress.

In the final, Russell faced Scotland internationalist Lorna McClymont from Milngavie. McClymont, who had lost in the final in extra holes in 2022 at Trump International, took an early lead. Her experience helped her build on this advantage, ultimately securing the title with a 5&3 victory.

The Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Nairn is a celebration of talent, tradition, and sportsmanship. Hannah’s achievement in making the top 16 and finishing 9th in the match play tournament underscores her potential and dedication to the sport. With such a strong performance, she has certainly made a name for herself in the world of Scottish women’s golf.
